FORT WAYNE, Ind. ---It’s not easy catching speedsters as they roar down city streets, even with the usual telltale engine revving and backfiring.

These guys are literally everywhere. And speeding, as enjoyable as it is for some, is a dangerous, prohibited activity.

Saturday, just after midnight, Fort Wayne officer C. Stuttle pulled over Jalen M. Downs, 23, of Fort Wayne at South Clinton and Wiebke streets, right there at South Side High School, as he sat “running stationary radar” in an unmarked police vehicle.

Downs was doing 80 miles an hour in a 35 mph zone, according to the probable cause affidavit Stuttle submitted. Stuttle pointed out Downs’ speed was 45 miles over the speed limit.

Downs, who was driving a black Honda Civic, was issued a citation for misdemeanor reckless driving at a unreasonably high speed.

Downs wasn’t the only one detained early Saturday morning by Stuttle. Driving a silver Mercedes, Jamison W. Tindall,19, of Fort Wayne, was clocked at 73 mph at the same intersection.

His traffic stop occurred around 1 a.m. at Clinton and Rudisill Boulevard. The officer noticed a slight odor of alcohol on him and when he was tested, the BAC (breath alcohol content) was at .026, much lower than the .08 drunk driving.

However, at 19, Tindall, is a minor because the drinking age is 21.

He was charged with misdemeanor reckless driving at an unreasonably high speed and misdemeanor being a minor consuming alcohol.

Both men have their next scheduled hearing on Oct. 13.
